Short Winners 2023

The second edition of La Mercantil Film Fest has closed its doors for another year with outstanding winners who dazzled the audience and the jury alike. With their captivating stories and exceptional visual storytelling skills, they took home the top prizes in a hotly contested competition. From poignant dramas to witty comedies, these award-winning short films shined for their originality and technical excellence. In this article, you will find the award-winning short films that stood out at the festival.

In the Western Lands category, awarded by the audience, we find Laura Castelo’s short, Un pessic de mel, which tells us the reality of a family but in a rather bittersweet way. Also in this category, but awarded by the jury, we have Llodrigons, a short film by Joana Antonin that shows us the violence exercised by a father towards his son and how he reacts.

In the next category, Original version in Catalan, the audience decided to award Albert Carbó’s short film, Sisè Primera, a comedy about an apartment and six potential tenants. On the other hand, awarded by the jury in the same vein, we have La Masia by Víctor Català, a story of horror and comedy that did not leave anyone indifferent.

As for the video clips awarded by the audience, we have Lobo’s video clip directed by Ivan Labanda. I Feeling by Guillem Barceló awarded by the jury.

Regarding the short film that was awarded the prize in the international selection category, both the jury and the audience agreed that the one that deserved the laurel was Our males and famales directed by Ahmad Alyaseer who tells us the pain of parents having to clean and dress their dead transgender daughter.

Finally, we have the mini short film winner, from the audience we find Mr Windibanks’ 1 o’clock directed by Tom Shiner a mini short that shows Mr Windibanks’ waiting for his date. Awarded by the jury we have Le Climatoseur by Arthur Jeanroy and Damien Babikian, which is about Jean-Marc falling asleep at the wheel of his car when a man from the future appears in the passenger seat to save his life.

In short, La Mercantil Film Fest has concluded with a group of talented winners who stood out for their creativity and exceptional skills in visual storytelling. These award-winning shorts and video clips offered a wide range of stories and genres, demonstrating the diversity and quality of independent cinema at the festival.

All this has been possible thanks, once again to the La Mercantil hall and also this year we have had the collaboration of the IEI and the Diputació de Lleida.
